Each year the Photographic Society of America and Fox Valley Camera Club join together to challenge youth from 5 area High Schools to produce photographs in five catagoeries: Architechture, Human Interest, Landscapes/Waterscapes, Photojournalism and Photographers Choice. The participating schools are Neenah High School, Appleton West High School, Appleton North High School, Appleton East High Schoo and Kimberly High School. At the end of the second semester student photographs from the 1st and 2nd semester classes are collected from each participating high school, and one best in each of four catogories and two from Photographer's Choice are selected to represent each school in a national judging. Fifty high schools throughout the country participate in this Photographic Society of America activity.
Nationally, one best photograph is chosen for the top award in each catagory, and one photograph is chosen as the best of all entries received. Cash awards are presented for each winning photograph in keeping with the award level. The photographs are also published in the PSA Journal, exhibited at the PSA Annual International Conference and on the PSA Web Site, and a one-year PSA Youth Membership is also awarded. Additional selected prints from all entries make up a 75 print exhibition shown at the Society's annual conference. Each year a select group from this exhibition is displayed in the PSA Oklahoma City Headquarters lobby, October through December.
The PSA Youth Photography/Fox Valley Camera Club Program, as of this writing, is in its seventh year. Funding in the form of a memorial for an eight-year period has provided award money for the winner's top medal and accompanying cash awards.
Schools look forward to this program and arrange their teaching schedules for Fox Valley Camera Club representatives to meet with the students. This is done for both the 1st and 2nd sememster photography classes. The students are shown examples of previous year's winning photos making the program instructive as well as informative.
Several Fox Valley area instructors, participating from the onset, have supplemented their photography class curriculum and teaching lessons with the Youth Photography Program's five categories of photographs.
Since the start of the program the five area high schools have produced several national winners.
The Appleton North High School Psychology Club, along with advisor Eric Eastman, sponsored the Second Annual Students with Exceptional Abilities Prom held Friday, May 27, 2005. Students from thoughout the Fox Valley were invited to attend the Prom, along with their families, friends and teachers.
The Commons at Appleton North was decorated in a Hawaiian theme for the prom. There were Palm trees hanging from the ceiling, and dancing to the Beach Boys and other themed music. Door prizes were awarded and there was a special raffle for a boom box and T.V. with a built in DVD player.
Jackie Boyd from Fox Valley Camera Club made it possible for the attendees to have a portrait taken. They will receive an 8 x 10 print free of charge thanks to donations from The Autism Society of the Fox Valley, Inc., Kings Daughters Charity Circle, Kings Daughters Service Circle and Heart of the Valley Optomists. Jackie, along with Tony Mauthe from Phopar, Inc., also took many candid photographs of the prom, which will be put on a CD that each person who attended the Prom will receive.
This was a great event giving those students in the Fox Valley who might not otherwise attend Prom, the chance to experience the same fun their regular education peers experince. With the ongoing support of the community, Eric Eastman hopes this event will continue yearly.
